Stem Cells
Stem cell therapy is a form of regenerative medicine designed to repair damaged cells within the body by reducing inflammation and modulating the immune system.

This phenomenon makes stem cell therapy a viable treatment option for a variety of medical conditions.

Stem cells are the body’s raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are created. Mesenchymal stem cells are adult stem cells that have self-renewal, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, signaling, and differentiation properties. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), self renewal capacity is characterized by their ability to divide and develop into multiple specialized cell types present in a specific tissue or organ.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be sourced from a variety of tissue including adipose tissue (fat), bone marrow, umbilical cord tissue, blood, liver, dental pulp, and skin.

MSCs are widely used in the treatment of various diseases due to their self-renewable, differentiation, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. In-vitro (performed in a laboratory setting) and in-vivo (taking place in a living organism) studies have supported the understanding mechanisms, safety, and efficacy of MSC therapy in clinical applications.

Our approach improves quality of life, delays aging, and prevents diseases.

Sources of Adult Stem Cells

Treatment protocols at the International Stem Cell Institute leverage stem cells from one or more of the following tissue sources.

Stem Cell Collection

Bone marrow collection

Each patient’s own bone marrow is collected by withdrawal into syringes that are inserted through the skin on the back and into the hip bones. This procedure is performed by an experienced hematologist with an anesthesiologist in a hospital operating room under light general anesthesia. Bone marrow collection typically takes about 1.5 hours.

Bone marrow collection is quite safe and most patients do not find it to be painful – during or after the procedure.

Adipose tissue collection

Each patient’s fat tissue is collected via mini-liposuction. This procedure is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon in a hospital setting under light general anesthesia. The surgeon will determine the most appropriate location(s) to perform the incision(s) for the required fat tissue extraction. The procedure typically take about an hour.

One of the most frequently used areas are the commonly referred as “love handles”. After the procedure, patients are observed for one hour in the post-op recovery room and then an additional 1 to 2 hours in another recovery room. Pain medication is prescribed for those who need it. Most patients require very little medication.

Human Umbilical Cord collection

We receive cord donations from healthy women in Colombia. Our donors sign a consent form, fill out a detailed questionnaire, and give a blood sample. The mothers’ blood and the cord blood undergo extensive testing for HIV, STD’s, hepatitis, etc. Once we ensure the cords are free of all infectious diseases and 100% safe we process the tissue to extract the stem cells.

All donated cords are the by-products of normal, healthy births. Each cord is carefully screened for sterility and infectious diseases under International Blood Bank standards.
